A pilot forgot to fill up a plane with fuel. Or maybe he thought they had enough to get to Baton Rouge. We lost one of the best bands ever 48 years ago today.

I was a freshman in college, when it broke out on the radio. We were big fans as Steve Gains and sister Cassie 's hometown was an hour away. It was a shock!

Damn, I am old. I remember hearing it on radio though...... surely was a shocking event and very sad. I still listen to them...to this day. RIP Ronnie VanZant... Johnnie and Donnie are still moving it forward.

I've read the FAA accident report on this crash. Apparantly the engines were set at a higher power level than necessary, and it burned fuel twice as fast. Somehow they had no warning that they were running out.

Crashing from loss of fuel is the reason most survived. Otherwise the plane would have exploded into a fireball and killed them all

That was to be their last flight with that plane. They didn't like it and they had an agreement with Aerosmith to sell it to them

@JesseInTX Hard to believe it’s been so long. I graduated high school in 1978.

Less than a year later Bob Crane got his head beat in with the tripod with which he made his home porno
