Tough question. There are so many ways to define "top". But if I was marooned on a desert island with the complete works of five bands, I think I'd choose these. Not saying that they are the MOST talented bands ever, but I wouldn't get bored, even listening for a LONG time.
Rush (no doubt at all about the #1 pick)
Dire Straits (not much doubt about #2 either)
Pat Benatar (best female voice, to my ears)
Metallica
Elton John up to and including Captain Fantastic (maybe, there are way too many options for the #5 pick, but good memories)
That should cover just about every mood. Plus, some of the best concerts I've ever been to -- so good memories.

@FrozenWasteland That's a good list. I never liked Rush, but my friends were wild about them.

Thanks, @originnone. Rush can be a bit of an acquired taste (that some people never do acquire - NTTAWWT) and Tom Sawyer wouldn't make my top 5 Rush songs in any event, but I appreciate musical talent and all three of those guys are (were -- RIP Neil) outstanding.
