I Am Listening To This Song Right Now
Fewer things more awkward than 8th grade. I was in love with Sandra that week. I assumed she was just another one of the girls who didn't know I existed. This one particular day as the buses were pulling out, I looked out the window and saw her leaning against the wall by the door that came out of the science hall. I caught her eye and she gave me a little wave. But that's not what this song is about.
Still 8th grade. The next to last day of school. Exam week. I had coach Totten for PE and health. That was the second year after combining the boys and girls gym classes. There were a lot of rumors going around that first year about locker rooms, and showers, and such, but none of the 7th grade boy's fantasies came to pass. For whatever reason, we had to take our health exam in the gym, up in the bleachers. Not the ideal situation for taking an exam, but hell, it's just health and PE. Coach Totten was ready for the school year to be over too. And he loved the Brothers Johnson. He had what we called back in the day a "boom box," just chock full of Brothers Johnson. In my very white, very Christian upbringing, I'd never heard of Brothers Johnson. This song played while we were taking our exam. And even now, aside from Cara Amburn, that's about all I remember from 8th grade. I love Brothers Johnson.
