This is still the best metal song, in my humble opinion.

In most music, the lead guitar does most of the active work. But in this song, it just steadily slams power chords. It's not lazy. I think it makes each new strum of the strings even more precious with that perfect reverb that sounds as if it's shaking the atmosphere for miles.

The bass sticks mostly to the root note, blending with the lead, occasionally separating from it in a dance of gorgeous dissonance.

The keyboards that subtly add that harmonious 3rd note which speaks to the heart, adding depth with their phasing effects.

The drums do so much more than just keeping the beat. They're the main attraction. Heavy and striking, mechanical, and yet still musical. A complex series of rumbling, labyrinthine sequences.

Mike Shinoda's unique lyrical mix of visual poetry and hiphop.

And Chester Bennington (God rest his soul), his alien, inharmonious, and yet beautiful melodies that sound like they came straight from the depths of pain itself. Like the sound of a heart's voice after being crushed.

I know that a lot of people will hear this song and interpret it as ugly. But I don't. I hear the heartache projected from it. A way of putting on display how much misery can be felt in a soul, and proving how hideous the human condition can be.

I always come back to this song. It's the perfect metal track.
