@caPnAhab That’s weird. Most of what I like came during the times that none of it was considered "mainstream".

@bijouxbroussard interesting. So what was mainstream at that time? Like I can see hip hop being it's most obscure during the 80s when glam metal was all the rage....

...of course, I wasn't alive then but whatever 😅
@caPnAhab Rap was considered "alternative" to R&B, and even the political stuff was relatively PG13.

@bijouxbroussard Alternative rap has always just been the term for rap that rejected mainstream trends in hip hop and tended to be a little more artsy and experimental. So while - for example - gangster rap was the biggest thing going you'd have groups making stuff that different sounds and different themes as, well, an alternative.

Tribe Called Quest, Fugees, early Kanye, Outkast are probably some of the biggest groups although who counts as 'alt' and doesn't is a debate for bigger music nerds than I.
