Chuck Jackson recorded it first.....Elvis Presley......Ronnie Milsap.
@JSul3 I know…but James Brown’s cover was unusual, imo. I know it didn’t get as much air time as the others.

@bijouxbroussard True....perhaps because it was not considered a major hit for Brown or play was limited to black radio stations, and nonexistent on the vast majority of radio stations that shunned 'race music.'
@JSul3 Perhaps. But also he was not known for singing pop standards so there was a certain expectation. And so he gave it his own unique spin. Same with his cover of "If I Ruled The World", which I think is also on that album.

@bijouxbroussard Yes....1969 album, It's A Mother on King record label.

Interesting that those 2 songs are on this album. They seem out of place based on tbe other cuts, all written or co-written by JB.
@JSul3 I own that album, my father gave it to me. I remember "the popcorn" being a popular dance at the time. 😄
