"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" – The Beatles

[media=https://youtu.be/uB2hoMCcwXk]
“Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” was written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon-McCartney), but reggae musician and McCartney acquaintance Jimmy Scott wanted songwriting credit for the song’s title and the use of his catchphrase, "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah.” McCartney was dismissive, saying it was “just an expression,” whereas Scott claimed it was an exclusive part of his stage act.The issue was settled when McCartney agreed to pay Scott’s legal bills (on an unrelated matter) on the condition that Scott stop his effort to get a co-writer’s credit.

There are widely varying opinions about “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.” Some regard it as one of the Beatles’ worst songs, if not one of the worst songs ever recorded. Even Paul’s fellow Beatles weren’t fond of it. John Lennon was especially vocal about his dislike of the song, reportedly calling it "more of Paul's 'granny music shit.'"

Others have a much more favorable view. One reviewer, for example, called it "fun music for a fun song about fun,” and another praised its "good-to-be-alive groove.” The White Album track was a big success on the charts after its November 1968 release as a single, reaching #1 in at least six countries. And in 1970, it earned the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership an Ivor Novello Award.

I've always liked the song myself. Its just an upbeat fun tune. Not the Beatles finest hour i'll admit, a touch 'bubblegum' much in the way Sweet's early hits, Papa Joe and Coco were far from the rockier hits they became known for.......but i love those too!

Paul accidently sings 'Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face, and in the evening shes a singer with the band' later in the song with amused John and was left in the final recording of the song. I rememver picking up on that as a kid thinking it was weird!
Not weird these days......maybe Desmond did a drag act at weekends!!!!???? Lol.

@RubySoo I feel the same way about the song. It's not of one the Beatles' best, but it is fun and upbeat, as you said.

Lol. I read about Paul's mistake when he sang the lyrics and the decision to keep it in the final recording. I considered mentioning it, but my post was already long by SW standards, so I decided to leave it out.

Desmond the weekend drag queen. That does put kind of a modern spin on it. Haha.

I don't know why they couldn't give him writing credit he did help write the song. My generation rappers and other artists get partial credit even if they didn't write one line.

As far as beetles songs I have to admit this isn`t one of the tops.

@Lostpoet It seems like he should have gotten a songwriting credit. Not sure why they were so resistant to it.

I agree. It's not a song that I would rank among their best, but I do think it's catchy and fun to listen to.

I've always liked it. It has a Reggae feel to it. And I like the story.

@hunkalove I've always liked it too. It's upbeat and does indeed have a reggae feel to it.

Sorry, but I never got into the Beatles. Could happily live the remainder of my life without hearing another of their songs.

@Rutterman I always did. Not a Beatles fan to say the least.
I'll give one exception. I liked Day Tripper. It was put together as a classic rock n roll song should be.

@Lilymoon John sure had a way with words, didn't he? 😅

People are sharply divided about the song. I happen to like it, but many people (including some Beatles fans) don't.
