Last night I listened to the BBC Promenade Concert from London with the Berlin Philharmonic. The first piece was the Beethoven Violin Concerto, a piece that has been a favourite of mine since I was a teenager, even though I cannot play the violin....

Aaahhh – the Violin Concerto in D Major op. 61; composed in 1806.
LvB started as a Mozart clone, but this concerto clearly shows how he outgrew his predecessor.
Excellent music. Viennese classical period at its very best. 🌷

That's a great recording. Nowadays the reference one is the Perlman with Guilini, although I do like the Oistrakh with Cluytens better. But then again, I somehow like that violinist better from the start.

@val70 to me Perlman is too stately. We have a terrific recording by patricia kopatchinskaja and Herrewehe which is fantastic too.

@val70 Oistrakh had a beautiful tone. I like kopatchinskaja because I imagine that is how Fritz Clement might have played it at the first performance. I doubt whether he would’ve matched kopatchinskaja‘s whirlwind cadenza though!
I have a feeling when we watch it my husband has a real crush on the violinist! 😂
