Mighty Music
Last night I listened to the BBC Promenade Concert from London with the Berlin Philharmonic. The first piece was the Beethoven Violin Concerto, a piece that has been a favourite of mine since I was a teenager, even though I cannot play the violin.
Such mighty music! Four taps from the timpani to begin and Beethoven builds the first movement from there. There are many different ways to play it but I learned it from a recording I saved up and bought by Heifetz who never let us forget that Beethoven marks the tempo, Allegro ma non troppo - ie Fast but not too fast.
