This song was sampled by a disco music female artist i am sure... From listening to this version it has to be a 1960's piece... The music is detailed and varied.. But the singer's voice seems to be too weak.. You would have to be a very sentimental person with probably a personal experience of heart break to be attracted to the lyrics...
Ok i found the later version.. I think this female singer has a more powerful singing voice and it's a version you can tap your feet too..

I always cry when they sing about leaving that cake out in the rain 🌧 🍰

Must better in Harry Potter as Albus Dumbledore

I’ve always detested the song mainly because it was too long

It's of an era... like Hey Jude (another vastly over-played tune back then) but it must have pleased the public.

@rinkydinkydoink Hey Jude is actually a good song though. Macarthur Park sounded bad then and it still sounds bad today

Likening a relationship to a cake is probably what got him dumped.

@CleverGirl well maybe so maybe not but it was the icing on the cake

I'd go for "a decent song" -- not great, not horrible, I didn't mind listening to it back in the day, but I didn't seek it out, either.
