“State of Independence” – Donna Summer

Donna Summer’s 1982 cover of “State of Independence”, written and first recorded by Jon Anderson and Vangelis. It’s one of my favorites by the Queen of Disco.
Summer’s recording was produced by Quincy Jones, who assembled an “all-star” choir to serve as backing singers. The group included Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, and Stevie Wonder.
The single reached #1 in the Netherlands and generally did well in other European countries. It wasn’t quite as popular in the US, only making it to #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
