No it reminds me of Saturday Night Fever.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Gibbon It's better than that.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@HairbrushDiva You can't sell it to someone who absolutely hated the disco era. I came to appreciate Steely Dan for being the crossover that took us out of that nightmare.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Gibbon I thought Steely Dan were a rock band.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@HairbrushDiva Ahha. Yet their first songs were played in the Disco bars as well. Hence the crossover. Those songs kinda brought the disco sounds into rock. This is what I'm thankful for and I give them credit for single handedly getting us out of that era.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Gibbon The songs I've heard by Steely Dan don't sound anything like disco. They just sound like an American rock band.

@Gibbon

- can you clarify please what period you're referring to?
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@HairbrushDiva This their first hit was played in Disco Bars.

@ArtieKat just posted the 1st . See video above.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Gibbon I've heard that one. I wouldn't call it disco. It's just rock.

@Gibbon Can't Buy A Thrill was released in 1972.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@HairbrushDiva Doesn't matter what we call it. The discos played it. It broke the mold.

@Gibbon
Do It Again" is a 1972 song composed and performed by American rock group Steely Dan, who released it as a single from their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill as its opening track. The single version differed from the album version, shortening the intro and outro and omitting the organ solo.

Released in 1972, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 18, 1972, and reached number 6 on the US charts in 1973, making it Steely Dan's second highest-charting single
Are you claiming that "Disco" existed in 1972/3?
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@ArtieKat You are correct and much earlier. Do it again was played in the discos then. It was a mix of a whole new sound then.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@ArtieKat Yes disco began to emerge around 69. Was well established by 1972

@Gibbon OK. I personally don't remember the term being used for a music genre until the late 70s - and I was deejaying at college discos in the early 70s.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Gibbon I know "Me And Mrs. Jones", that still gets played on the radio. I wouldn't call that disco either, I'd call it smooth soul or easy listening soul.
ArtieKat · M
@HairbrushDiva Me too.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@ArtieKat @HairbrushDiva My whole point here is the music I was exposed to as disco being a kid out of psychedelic era drove me crazy. Steely Dan's sound was unique yet found its way into discos whether we call it that or not and I give them credit for breaking the mold and leading into the great music the later 70s and early 80s produced.
