Someone Saved My Life Tonight. EJ fought and won a fight with MCA against cutting down the 6:45 length so radio would play it. But you can't do that to a song, this one especially.
Everything about this song is incredible. The very first chord has this suspended feeling, Elton's impassioned vocal, the depth of the lyrics, the drums, oh the drums by Nigel Olsson, one of the best ballad drummers of all time. These were not boxy Eagles-type sounds. Producer Gus Dudgeon made them sound huge, WAY before the 80s or Phil Collins did so.
"Thank God my music's still alive!" That line slices through me.
The genius moment is around 4:46 where Nigel and the band dip down in tempo *just a bit* and get right back for the chorus. That's high drama there, building then releasing tension, you really only hear that in orchestral works.
Album debuted at #1, the first one ever to do that.
I'm not hearing anyone write songs like this lately. This is some "game over" shit.

@uncalled4 i might concur with this one over Funeral For A Friend

@BuzzedLightyear I'm a drummer and Nigel's playing kills me, matches Elton lick for lick whenever he's on a track.

@uncalled4 you're going to make me put on my headphones now

@BuzzedLightyear Enjoy. I might put on the 5.1 mix of this, which is crazy.
BuzzedLightyear · 61-69

BuzzedLightyear · 61-69

@BuzzedLightyear Nope. EJ has a pretty good batting average. I love Songs From The West Coast as well. He really grabbed the 70s sound on that one.

@BuzzedLightyear That one reminds me of 70s variety shows and everything else I avoided like Kryptonite.
