I hadn't heard. I still have that (vinyl) album, and love that particular song.

🕯
@Piper One of my favorites in the whole canon too, although good live versions are rare to non-existent.

At least he didn’t kill himself young with drugs like Jerry did.
@RedBaron Yeah, it really hurt when Jerry died so young and so needlessly.

Are you…. Perhaps… grateful he’s dead?
@Ideation The name originated from a dictionary entry about a folktale.

GRATEFUL DEAD The motif of a cycle of folk tales which begin with the protagonist coming upon a group of people ill-treating or refusing to bury the corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last money, either to pay the man’s debts or to give him decent burial. Within a few hours he meets with a travelling companion who aids him in some impossible task, gets him a fortune, saves his life, etc. The story ends with the companion disclosing himself as the man whose corpse the other had befriended.

Rest in peace Phil. Great bass player.
This guitar was known as the "mission control bass" because it had so many knobs!

Here's bearded Phil on the far right in front of the "Wall of Sound" (mid 70's). Four of the audio channels in the Wall were dedicated to Phil's bass - one channel (and one stack of speakers) for each string!

I just heard about this. Saw the Dead in 1991. Always liked his bass playing. RIP.
