Swing Out Sister - "Breakout"

Another of my favourite 80s hits. I bought this one when I was about 14.

I have not heard this since the 80's.

@NativePortlander1970 I still hear it a lot. I have it on an 80s compilation.
@KarenisKenziesmum That would make sense. I think the reason I forgot about this song is that it didn't hit hit the top 100 in the states, which means it didn't get much radio play past its first year.

@NativePortlander1970 That wasn't a hit in the States? Why not? It was quite a big hit in Britain. I'm pretty sure it was in the top ten when I bought it.
@KarenisKenziesmum Not all British/European bands make it on the US charts.
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@NativePortlander1970 I suppose not, but we'd think the best ones would.
@KarenisKenziesmum Not everyone has the same taste in music, and here in the states the radio DJs are the ones that determines which band/singer is going to be the next hit, or who is going to flop.
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@NativePortlander1970 That's cheating. It should be the one that sells the most in one week that's number one, and the rest of the chart determined by sales figures for that week, in order. That's the only fair way.

As for taste, I know not everyone has the same taste, but my sisters and most of my friends have similar taste to mine.
@KarenisKenziesmum It can't get to #1 if a nationally popular DJ doesn't like the song and refuses to play it, radio play in the US determines sales.
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@NativePortlander1970 That's disgraceful. I don't like the number one when I was born, but if it sold more than anything else when I was born then it had to be number one whether certain people like it or not. This was number one when I was born: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n8hB5ou9eY
@KarenisKenziesmum This was the #1 when I was born, and has always been a favorite of mine.

@NativePortlander1970 It's better than the Slade one. I think that was the only hit Edison Lighthouse had, I've never heard anything else by them. I think they are one of those one-hit wonders.
@KarenisKenziesmum Many one hit wonders are that way here in the states, but still have more chart toppers in the UK and Europe.

@NativePortlander1970 Was this a hit in the States? I think the singer is American. I remember it being a hit in the UK when I was a child. I've never heard anything else by this singer so as far as I know she's a one-hit wonder.

@KarenisKenziesmum I don't remember this song, back in the late 70's the anti disco mania was at its height, no station dared to play R&B of any kind at the time, lest they face backlash by the power demographic, the 18 to 34 crowd who prefered hard rock.
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@NativePortlander1970 I like R&B, especially the Mary J. Blige or TLC variety. I don't like hard rock. Yes, I know a lot of people who do like hard rock and that is their choice, but it doesn't appeal to me.
@KarenisKenziesmum One thing I hate most about the Gen X and 70's facebook groups and pages is how they're always slamming disco and soft rock. "Oh, you like Barry Manilow and John Denver? Play one more Carole King or Carpenters video and I'll have you kicked out."
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@NativePortlander1970 People don't have that kind of attitude where I live. People like what they like and can be very fixed about it, but there's no name-calling people who like something else. It's live-and-let-live city here.
