I'm around them a lot and they absolutely fascinate me. They have about a dozen vocalizations and if you learn some you get an idea of what they're 'saying.' What's super cool to me is when you hear what sounds like a big pack going off it's just usually just a few of them. They change their vocalizations quickly to make it sound like there's more of them than there are. I love watching them in the forest and they pose zero threat. They also can't be culled because the females can control their litter size. Beautiful and amazing animals.

@Ynotisay thats awesome, Ill enjoy them while I still work here! Never seen any coyotes while camping or on a hike surprisingly. Gonna miss them when I quit. 😢

@mooncrest02 Have to guess you were living where they're not around much. But they're spreading everywhere. I'm sure you'll see them again. I live in a forest in California and see them pretty much every day. They're such awesome neighbors. They earn their keep and are just totally chill. You don't want a small dog off leash but other than that they're harmless. Hope wherever your next stop is they're around. You clearly connect with them. 👍

@Ynotisay yea I live in the city a lil closer to the beach but my job is like right next to Griffith Park. Living in a forest is a dream, youre very lucky! Thanks I hope so too, i work in healthcare but escape to nature when I can. :)

@mooncrest02 Awesome. I used to live very near there too and spent WAY too much time walking and riding in those hills. It's such a great feature of L.A..It's so accessible. But for years I'd drive up to the Angeles NF most every weekend to hike and backpack. Takes a little more time but you can be at 8,000 feet and in the wilderness before you know it. Not many coyotes up there but I've seen plenty of foxes, bears, bighorn sheep and bobcats. So if you haven't put that one on your nature escape list yet...go for it. :)
I finally got smart and moved to what I used to have to drive too. Being up high where nature is always present has been a game changer. Very lucky.

@Ynotisay yes griffith park is awesome but it gets crowded very easily, that kills it for me sometimes. I do go up to ANF! :) id say my favorite mountains are the santa monica mountains, right next to the sea w beautiful views😌♥️

@mooncrest02 Yeah. The park does get crowded but depending on the time of day, and where you go, you can still have some solitude but it's a little different than wilderness solitude. But you did find a couple of options that are pretty close. Trail system in the Santa Monica's is pretty solid, and recovers better than up high in the ANF after fires, so you've got some options. Good time of year too. A little green in those hills is nice. Not sure if you've been but a couple of options with a touch more driving that might worth checking out is Los Pinos NF out past Frazier Park and Wrightwood on the east side of the ANF, Generally fire free for a while out there and they're both really pretty. Happy Trails. :)

@Ynotisay Thanks! Ill try to look up Los Pinos because its not coming up on my maps but thanks again :)

@mooncrest02 HA. Shit. I've been away for a while. It's MOUNT Pinos. It's in the Los Padres NF. I interchanged them. Sorry about that. :)

Unless you dig snow hiking and have spikes, I would imagine there's still a good amount of snow/slush. Probably need a few weeks before it's clear.

It's a little wider in spots but it's a super nice hike up to the summit. Leaves from the big parking lot at the end of the road. Safe, mellow climbing, probably short of two miles, with some sweet views and cool terrain at the top. It's close to 9K so you'll breath a little harder but it's nothing crazy. A trail also starts from the summit and you drop in to the forest.

And just to toss out there, I've never seen anything remotely sketchy. Good vibe up there. The power of pine. 🤙
