“You’re So Vain” – Carly Simon

Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun.

This line from "You're So Vain" references a real event—the solar eclipse of July 10, 1972. In North America, it was only visible as a total eclipse in northern Alaska, Northern Canada, eastern Quebec, and the Canadian Maritimes (including Nova Scotia).

Enjoy today's solar eclipse if you're in area where you can see it. Where I live, I'll only be able to see clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee...

When I was a kid I was fascinated by the “clouds in my coffee” lyric when the song came on the radio.

@Bumbles It's an interesting lyric. According to Simon, this was the genesis of it:

"It came from an airplane flight that I took with Billy Mernit, who was my friend and piano player at the time. As I got my coffee, there were clouds outside the window of the airplane and you could see the reflection in the cup of coffee. Billy said to me, 'Look at the clouds in your coffee'."

@Rutterman That’s so cool, thanks. Did she ever confirm the song was about Warren Beatty?

@Bumbles You're welcome.

She has confirmed that part of the song is about Beatty:

In November 2015, Simon, promoting her about-to-be-published memoirs, said, "I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren (Beatty)" and added that "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him". Simon added to the mystery by including "Now, that doesn't mean that the other two verses aren't also about Warren," she told the BBC. "It just means that the second one is."

@Rutterman Lol, just a little bit of mystery left. Thanks. Susanna Hoffs does a cover that's pretty good, but it's no Carly Simon.
