“Amos Moses” – Jerry Reed

[media=https://youtu.be/PbXFHSa4YmQ]
Swamp rock novelty song written and recorded by Jerry Reed.

The song tells the story of a south Louisiana alligator poacher named Amos Moses. He was “mean as a snake” and people said it was because “his daddy would use him for alligator bait” when he was a boy. Amos could trap gators with one hand–which was his only hand because an alligator bit the other one off (along with the rest of his lower left arm). When the sheriff heard Amos was in the swamp illegally trapping alligators, the lawman went in to nab him, “but he never come out again”.

“Amos Moses” was Jerry Reed’s highest charting single on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching #8 in Feb. 1971. It peaked at #16 on the US Country chart and made it to #2 in Canada.

@TrashCat It's an entertaining story. Jerry sounded like he had a lot of fun telling/singing it, which made it fun for the listener.

murder by a meanie i presume. 😳 i wonder why the Canadians liked it so much more..?
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@YoMomma Presumably, though Jerry leaves it a bit ambiguous: "Well, I wonder where the Louisiana sheriff went to? You can sure get lost in a Louisiana bayou."

Ah, who knows why the Canadians liked it more than JR's fellow Americans?

Sorry my brain is random..
Woah, I haven’t heard that song in decades. It always tickled me. My father was rather fond of it, too. 😄
