Hope's Top Guitarists....

Just for S & G's, and because our daughter Hope has seen us write up our lists of
favourite albums by various groups, our 9 year old has wanted to get in on the act
too!

To prep this, we have to state that she is a bit of a guitar nut. She's played for
a couple of years now - pretty much living and breathing the guitar - and has way
surpassed where we ever thought she'd be. As the Duponte/Durose household has the
'many and varied' tag to the music's played, we (oh, ok 'I') asked her who her fav
guitarists where and why....oh, and some tracks as examples. What you hear might
just shock you...It did me!

Just a note; she picked out the tunes.

5 Tommy Emmanuel

Acoustic guitarist par excellence. I believe he's Australian and what he can do with a
piece of wood and a few strings is very scary! Over to Hope "Not well known outside of
guitar players, but plays a variety of different styles of acoustic music like country,
folk and classical. He's neat."

4 Richie Sambora

Of, Bon Jovi. A bit of a surprise. Co-writer of some of the biggest rock hits of the
80's and 90's. Again, Hope says "..great songwriter, wonderful singer. The parts he plays
for the song are memorable, but can be hard to play. He's a rock star."

3 Eric Johnson

The 'Tonehound From Texas'. Again, I have all his albums. 'Ah Via Musicon' (1990) is
something that I have played all my life. Over to Hope "He has a sound that everyone
has copied since he came out. There's before Eric and then after Eric..." (funny
having a 9 year old say that!) "He's got great songs and sings too.."

2 Joe Satriani

Steve Vai's teacher. Again, no big surprise (to me!) Again, we have his albums (my
collection) and, I'd say that 'Shapeshifting' (2020) helped to keep her sane in the
Covid Isolation years. When asked why : "Writes great instrumentals around blues and
rock. His legato.." (muso term...I dunno!) "..and his phrasing. He also seems a nice
man.."

Yep...

1 Steve Vai

No surprise here. She adores Steve. Has, I think, all his albums and has his signature
guitar (the JEM Jnr). She spends most of her time learning his songs too. So, that was a
non-brainer. When asked why, here's what she said : "He plays with humour. He has a big
sound. He writes interesting pieces of music. He gets that from Frank Zappa. He's great! He's my
hero!"

Ok...

So, there's the music's and styles loved by our 9 year old. It kind of gives you faith in the future. Now, don't have a go at her, like 'Why not...' him or her on the list...she's young! She's flippin' 9 years old! Plenty of time to pick out others and, remember....favourites means favourites to US. They have an emotional connection to US. Who's to say that we shouldn't have OUR feelings!

Thank you...

My guitar teacher, sweetheart, was a bit of a fan of Tommy Emmanuel and so I looked him up - frighteningly good and a funny guy - and we - me and Hope - both listened to some of his repertoire together.

Steve Vai? Think we're both Steve Vai'd out by now! Lol!
