Wasn't aware of the Manhattan Transfer version.
It's more general and less personal.
Croce's is great, he really tells a story through the song and you understand how he feels about the ex girlfriend he's thinking about and trying to reach.
Dated references though... telephone operator? A dime to make a call?

@SumKindaMunster Agreed. Try finding a public phone...But people evolve more slowly, so the emotions are still the same..But Manhattan Transfer are just musically a master class. And had a great cabaret style act as well.😷

I saw Manhattan Transfer live in the mid-70s - I really only went to accompany a female friend who loved them. They were absolutely brilliant - their versatility never came out in their released work.
