New phonograph cartridge brings new life to setup
For all of you audiophiles out there, I bought a new phonograph cartridge and the difference in sound is incredible. I'm lucky to still have my hearing intact to hear the difference. After reviewing several, I picked the Audio-Technica VM540ML. It replaces an older Ortofon VMS 3E. I have an Optonica to-4705 turntable, a rebuilt Sherwood S-602 CP amp, and hand build 1976 speakers using Phillips speakers and hand wound crossovers.
The 540 has a stated frequency range of 20-27khz and tracking weight of 2g. Cost is $270 USD. The first thing I noticed is how bright and clear the high tones such as snare drums and symbols were. It also has a much fuller sound giving presence like the band is playing beside you. Dual magnets give excellent channel separation. My true test was a play of the 1969 vinyl "On His Majesty's Secret Service" sound track. The French horns, violins, snares, and xylophone sound incredible. Gave me chills. If you are looking for an upgrade, I can happily recommend this cartridge. You won't be disappointed.
