The Girl From Ipanema is Dead 😢

Iconic Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto died today, at the age of 83. “I’m here to bring you the sad news that my grandmother became a star today and is next to my grandfather João Gilberto. Astrud was the true girl who took bossa nova from Ipanema to the world,” Gilberto’s granddaughter Sofia said on her Instagram page, in a statement that CNN translated from Portuguese.
Here's Astrud with Stan Getz:

Yes you are a star now, in that mighty, infinite, amazing universe, and your light will shine on us forever. 😞

I early learnt this now, from your post. This is so sad. A real icon and legend. People always think of the 1960s as The Beatles etc, but there was another 60s, before that, and Bossa Nova was part of it. Wonderful sensual music. The soundtrack to a holiday in the sun!

I have the recording Getz A Go Go, a live recording that features Astrud a lot, my favorite.

@SW-User Thank you! 🌷
In a sense, the Beatles, and more generally the 1960s British Invasion killed many strains of excellent music which predated that rock'n'roll uniformity. Bossa Nova is a typical example.
Stan is a fantastic musician, although a bit conservative, in my opinion. I'm more of a Miles fan! 🎶

@helenS Yes Miles Davis! I have so many of his recordings, particularly interested in the one from the 1957 film: Ascenseur pour Lechafaud.

@SW-User Wow!!! 🌷🌷🌷
I think I have all his original albums (CDs, not vinyl albums). I love this guy. I even have several books about the man and his music.
My favorite MD albums are:
– Ascenseur pour Lechafaud.
– Nefertiti , and generally every 2nd Great Quintet album
– On the Corner (oh yes!!!)
– Agharta
– We Want Miles

Thanks for posting this. 👏
Like Tina Turner (only a year younger), both were icons in their respective genres. Who knows, maybe they are now dueting somewhere over the rainbow, so to speak.

Sad news. I loved that song. Teaming up with Stan Getz produced some unforgettable numbers.
helenS · 36-40, F
@novaguy2u Absolutely. I love Jobim's song because it is, on the one hand, easy-listening Martini bar music, and on the other hand it's harmonically extremely sophisticated. And Stan is, of course, on of the coolest jazz instrumentalists ever.
Thank you for your comment! 🌷

That's an iconic song, but now she is resting in peace. 🪦💐
helenS · 36-40, F
@MrGomco I love her incredible, cool voice. May the eternal light shine on her.

@helenS her voice is a legacy now, R.I.P. 😞
oh,, oh my heart~ 🥹

@SatyrService Thank you – I am watching with interest...
helenS · 36-40, F
@SatyrService Actually your post made me take a look at the chord progression of the song, and it's simply amazing. I'm not a total idiot when it's about harmonic analysis but that one escapes me. It doesn't fit into the typical patterns of Western-style harmonies, but it works so very well.
@helenS that poster is Very well educated, I recommend
I ALSO recommend the lady that was singing for hims
she LOVES the music and it shows

I did see this about 5 hours ago on my Google feed.
She had such a unique European feel to her voice and was always sure to make the evening special with her song.

@helenS
Wasn’t she French?
I always felt that accent when i listened for some reason.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Pfuzylogic As far as I know she was a Brazilian, born in Brazil, and her native language must have been Portuguese. I don't hear a French accent.
Pfuzylogic · M
@helenS I never knew.
something about her voice was incredibly soothing.

@therighttothink50 What a beautiful playlist! Thank you – now I've got something to listen to when I go to bed tonight (6:30pm here) 🌷
PS The only one of those I've heard before is Maynard's "La Fiesta": excellent jazz!
Jazz – America’s one true original art form. 🎼🎶 <== should be syncopated

@therighttothink50 A true classic!!! And "Take 5" as a title is only appropriate, as it's really in 5/4, it's bam-da-da bam-da bam-da-da bam-da
Paul Desmond is, of course, amazing.
Proof that whites can play jazz too!
