“Think of Laura” – Christopher Cross

[media=https://youtu.be/FDwzrbX0WhY]
On April 17, 1982, Denison University student Laura Carter was killed by a stray bullet in Columbus, Ohio while riding in a car with her parents. Singer-songwriter Christopher Cross knew Carter and was dating her best friend Paige McNinch at the time. He wrote “Think of Laura” as a tribute to Carter and as a way of offering solace to McNinch.

In 1983, the popular ABC soap opera General Hospital used the song as the theme for its “Luke and Laura” storyline. ABC never paid Cross for using “Think of Laura” and never asked for permission to use it. In fact, the songwriter said he asked them to stop playing it, but they refused.

As wrong as ABC was for not respecting Christopher Cross’s wishes (and not paying him), it still should be noted that the network’s soap opera gave his song a big boost. It had been released in Jan. 1983 as a track on his Another Page album. Only after the song had widespread exposure on General Hospital was it released as a single in Dec. 1983. It quickly became a hit, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it remained in the top spot for four weeks.

I applied to Dennison in 1992, but went to another college instead.

I have family who live in the Columbus area, but neither I nor they grew up there. Where they all live now seems safe, but other areas are not, like with most large cities.

@JoyfulSilence Don't know too much about the school, but I understand it's a highly regarded liberal arts institution.

People like to talk about how crime-ridden NYC is, but I've heard the violent crime rate in Columbus, OH is three times higher than it is in New York.

It's great to see you again, my friend. We all were worried about you. I hope you're doing much better now. 🙏
@JoyfulSilence Heyaaa, Joy! 🤗

@Rutterman I am still in a Baltimore hospital waiting to be discharged. All my surgeries are done and my wounds are healing well. I requested a rehab center (I cannot walk without a walker--it is a long story) but my insurance denied it. I need wound care and physical therapy. I live alone on a second floor apartment. The physical therapy here at the hospital is spotty at best.

It is…Thanks. Hope you’re feeling better now. Time you move out of Washington DC. 🥺 @JoyfulSilence

@Vivaci It’s not so easy for everyone to just pick up, move, and leave their lives behind.
Why not? 🤔 I’ve done that….many many times. @RedBaron

@JoyfulSilence Sorry you've still got a ways to go. I can only imagine how difficult this must be.

@Vivaci

I may move someday. First I need to recover!

@Rutterman

I have a ways to go, but I may never be quite the same. Sigh.

At least my job is sedentary.
@JoyfulSilence Don’t give up so soon….remember our mind is the most powerful tool we have. Don’t think you can never be the same…you can! 🤗

@Vivaci

I will never be the same. But at least I am alive.
