"Poor Side of Town" – Johnny Rivers

[media=https://youtu.be/mCpFwFlWpVg]
One of Johnny Rivers’ most popular recordings, reaching #1 on the charts in both the U.S. and Canada in 1966.

Unlike many of his other hit songs, Rivers wrote (co-wrote, to be more precise) this one and was the first to record it. The pop ballad also marked a departure from the rock and roll style of music he was known for earlier in his career.

Rivers once said of “Poor Side of Town”: “That one just came out – I don’t know what inspired it…It was not from any personal experience, because I was living in Beverly Hills. People just relate to it.”

Also, Johnny Rivers turns 80 years old today. Happy birthday to Mr. Rivers.

@Vivaci A sweet, sweet song it is, and more than fifty years after its release, people still love it. ❤️

Hope Johnny is having a good one. He still performs, though he isn't touring right now according to his website.
@Rutterman It’s certainly a peppy number that has such a deep meaningful lyrics.💖 This is what modern day songs lack most of the time.

Wow!! May he live a healthy and active life…🌹✨🙏🏼

Hard to believe but Johnny Rivers was the first to record "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." It was just an album cut in 1966.

@hunkalove Interesting. I suspect most people aren't aware of this.

Just listened to Rivers' recording. As expected, he did a nice job with it.

Mountain of love was another favorite of mine.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@MrBrownstone He did a great job with that one. My favorite by him probably is "Summer Rain", but I've already posted it.
A beautiful song. I’m surprised it’s not more reflective of his own experience; but I’ll bet it was for many of those who loved it.

@bijouxbroussard Yes, it is a beautiful song. I suspect you're right, that it is relatable to many who love it.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@bijouxbroussard I can't say it moved me. I liked the fast rock 'n' roll songs back then.
