What's your opinion on this?

When I play a piano cover in front of an audience I have to make the decision between playing it like the original, and adding my own spin to it.

On one hand, you could say it's best to add your own spin and make it original.

On the other, you could say that it's an insult to the original creator of the song.

Which would you rather hear? (Use any song as an example.)

I don’t care if a performer want to add their own spin to any song with one huge exception. Any country’s national anthem should be played straight with zero flourishes or improvisational crap.

It’s disrespectful. I once heard a butchering of “O Canada” that provoked thoughts of homicide within me and “The Star Spangled Banner” has been raped by singers for decades.

@SW-User Funny you should mention the Beatles. As I was writing this, I was thinking that every cover they've done and made even more popular, they did their own spin on it.
