I learned something interesting this morning.

I know the last few years vinyl records have made a huge comeback. Well it seems those old cassette tapes of yours are worth money now. They have increased 98% in value in the last year alone.

@sarabee1995 I have a stack of vinyl LPs. Some in mint condition and worth a bit.

@Stereoguy Wait, what? You couldn't fast forward or rewind?? That's crazy.

@KiwiBird I have a bunch as well but nothing to play them on.

@sarabee1995 Ditto no record player either. (They were Dad's)

@Stereoguy Very interesting. 🙂

@KiwiBird Mine are from my grandfather. Lots of 60's and 70's stuff. Dad has a huge collection too.

@sarabee1995 Any 78's lol.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@KiwiBird I suspect there's some additional meaning there that escapes me? 🤔

@sarabee1995
Vinyl records come in three speeds: 33 1/3 rpm (often just called a “33”), 45 rpm and 78 rpm. The “rpm” is an abbreviation for “revolutions per minute” — an indication of how fast the record is meant to spin on the turntable.
78s disappeared in the late 1950's. Music length was only about 5-6 minutes aside on a 12' record.
33⅓ or LP Music length was about 20-25 minutes aside. Also 12 inch.
45 or 7 inch records went for about 4-6 minutes aka Single Record one song per side.

@KiwiBird Ohhhhh! Lol, I had no idea! And I assume all players had all available speeds??
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 They used to have all three speeds. Many these days only have 45 and 33⅓.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@KiwiBird Oh. Unfortunate for those 78's. I assume the higher spin rate meant better quality music?
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 No....78's were mono not stereo and had wider grooves.....the records themselves were brittle and originally made from shellac. The original styluses were wider, played on modern players they don't sound that good.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@KiwiBird Oh! So the transition from 78 to 33 was due to an improvement in the technology. Very cool.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Well five to six minutes a side of music wasn't of much commercial value. The 45 that came out could hold the same amount of music on a 7" disc as the old 78 on a full length subway size.

@KiwiBird I gotta ask .... Are you researching as this chat progresses, or did you know all this about old records?
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 I knew most of it.....I did refresh. 🤣 I remember the 78's they were very thick. I never brought them with me, way too heavy. They were 1930 vintage comedy sketches, from my grandfather I think. In Dad's stuff.

@KiwiBird Very cool. 🙂
