"(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" – The 5th Dimension

[media=https://youtu.be/3OY77yy7V00]
Top Ten hit in the US, Canada, and Australia, recorded by the popular American vocal group, the 5th Dimension.

Songwriter Tony Macaulay first pitched "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" to the Carpenters. They told Macaulay they loved the song and initially agreed to record it, but later had second thoughts because it mentioned the use of a sleeping pill. The songwriter subsequently edited out the reference.

However, Macaulay was unhappy with the change, and when he was contacted the following week by the 5th Dimension’s record producer, he offered the song to the group. They performed it as it was originally written.

I’m not much of a Carpenter’s fan, so secretly happy that we have a nice 5th Dimension song instead. 😸🎶

Thank you, sleeping pill. 😜

@Vivaci I do love the Carpenters, but there's no way they could have done a better job with it than the 5th Dimension. As I said to PoetryNEmotion, the 5th D. were perfect for the song.

Haha. I think the Carpenters (or their manager/record producer) wanted to preserve their squeaky-clean image. 😇
@Rutterman POE has blocked me, I think.

But Karen Carpenter used to take laxatives(for her anorexia), didn’t she? 🤔

@Vivaci Oh, I'm sorry. 😬

Idk, she might have.

The Carpenters (Richard and Karen) didn't like their clean-cut image, from what I understand. I suspect it was their record producer or manager who was responsible for their "second thoughts" on the song. They had readily agreed to do it when it was first presented to them.
@Rutterman Aah!!! Thank you for the thoughtful response, Pah. ❤️
