First-rate cover of a song written and originally recorded by Stephen Stills.
According to the songwriter, it was inspired by a comment (“If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with") made by fellow musician Billy Preston. Stills asked him if he could use the line and Preston agreed to it. The song was a hit for Stills, reaching #14 on the US pop chart in early 1971.
Later that year, the Isley Brothers released their version of “Love the One You’re With”. It was a hit for them as well, peaking at #3 on the US R&B chart and #18 on the pop chart.
