Gramophone sounds tinny

It has never occurred to me, I was listening to my favourite Ted Weems shellacs on a victor hand-crank grammophone. It sounds very tinny and it gives me a fatigue. Could you provide a solution to this? I would never purchase eletric players becauth I am too refined to get electrocuted.
