Is there a musical artist who had an untimely death, that whenever you hear their work, saddens you?

@bijouxbroussard He was one of the other acts appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show the night the Beatles debuted in 1964. A few years later, he had his own "Beatles" experience.
@graphite He was my favorite Monkee! The same way I remember vivdly the day Kennedy was shot and 9/11 I remember that Ed Sullivan show.I don't think I've been that excited since

@fernie2 I wasn't very old for that Ed Sullivan appearance but I think I have vague, vague recollections of it. I remember my mother was excited about it. I don't remember anything about JFK from 3 months' earlier.

FWIW, as a condition of permanent US residency, Davy had to sign up for the US military draft, at the height of the Vietnam War and came extremely close to being conscripted into the Army. He got out of it by losing enough weight to disqualify himself (He was only about 5'4" and didn't weigh much to begin with).
