What did fourteen year old Mozart do on Spy Wednesday?
Today is “Spy Wednesday” – to commemorate the day Judas made his deal with the Temple authorities.
In 1770 a father took his fourteen year old son, Wolfi, to Spy Wednesday Mass at the Sistine Chapel. The choir sang Allegri's haunting polyphonic "Miserere mei, Deus"
Later that night in their hotel room, the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was not able to sleep. He got up and wrote the entire piece from memory! Not sure he had gotten it all right, the boy returned to the Sistine Chapel for services on Good Friday, and made one or two minor corrections. http://tinyurl.com/y4mxdaxx
