The Cadillac Three is probably my favorite that would fit under the huge umbrella of alt-country.

Several years ago, I took my wife to see Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley, which are two performers that I'd never choose to see on my own, because that style is a bit too polished for my tastes. I like music that's a bit grittier. The Cadillac Three were unknown and opening.

These guys come out and look so grungy that we thought they were the roadies. Without an announcement, they rip into this swampy Zeppelin-ish intro and then tear into their first song. As the entire crowd recoils at this loud, grimy band, I jump out of my seat, pump my fist, and yell. Discovering this band made everything else I had to endure that night worth it.

A lot of the newer country just sounds like Def Leppard with fiddles to me. If I want to listen to country, I want something that sounds earthy and like it was played by humans. When I'm in the mood for country, it's usually the outlaw country stuff like Waylon, Cash, and "Shotgun Willie".
