Who Should Be In The Big 4?

Personally I always felt like Overkill or Testament should’ve been in the Big 4... I’m not the biggest fan of Slayer and while I like Anthrax, I feel like someone else should take their place. Metallica is great as well but they lost me a bit after And Justice For All. If I could pick my personal ‘Big 4’ It would be Testament, Annihilator, Megadeth and Overkill! I’d love to hear everyone’s opinion :)

What about Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and AC/DC?
Throger · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge well the ‘Big 4’ Of thrash I should say 😂 but they are all great and definitely paved the way for these bands in the first place. I love some Deep Purple!
@NankerPhelge Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are great... The other two though... Plagerism + Unoriginality = Led Zeppelin and AC/DC

@Throger The question didn't ask who should be in the Big 4 of Thrash, it asked who should be in the Big 4. As an old-school rocker who was in my teens before the "thrash" genre came out, I picked four of the most seminal rock bands who still have a fervent following after 40-odd years.

@Qwerty14 Led Zeppelin, unoriginal? 🙄.
It's amazing to me that LZ, DP and BS all formed in 1968. Their music was all unique and amazing. I can agree to disagree about Zep though.

@NankerPhelge well okay, I was just saying but you go

@DirtyBird Qwerty is talking bollocks.

@NankerPhelge i believe there was controversy over Stairway to Heaven? I forget which song it was I’m not a big Zepplin fan

@Throger but that's only one song out of many, that are exponentially better then Stairway. Imho.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@DirtyBird Huh?
Throger · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge I fixed it I meant to say over
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Throger I know the "Stairway To Heaven" intro was nicked by Dolly Parton (I forget the title of her song), but that was after the Led Zeppelin classic, not before it.

@NankerPhelge Gotcha I’m trying to think. I thought for some reason they got into huge trouble for supposed copying and plagiarism but I may be thinking of someone else
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Throger I don't think it was "Stairway To Heaven", I think it was "Whole Lotta Love".
Throger · 26-30, M
@NankerPhelge I honestly don’t care too much. They still have some good tunes. I honestly want to sit down and go through their entire catalog along with The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd

@Throger You are correct, and I forget the name of the band they say it was from. I do remember it was the estate of the singers family that was suing LZ. He was deceased.
They didn't win the case though, I believe.
DirtyBird · 56-60, F
@Throger and it was definitely stairway to heaven.
Throger · 26-30, M
@DirtyBird ahhh I thought it was that song. Either way I still like them. I mean hardly anyone knows Elvis’s Hound Dog is a cover. I mean covers and plagiarism are two different things but still. And especially nowadays it’s tough with all the music out there to not have similarities
DirtyBird · 56-60, F
@Throger I don't see how it's possible to come up with a riff, this day and age, that hasn't been recorded somewhere.
I remember listening to both Stairway and the other song. Yes there were similarities, but it wasn't exactly the same. It was open for interpretation.

@DirtyBird My dad told me when I was only 7 that the same combinations of notes had all been used donkey's years ago. That was in 1969.

@NankerPhelge It completely makes sense to me, even that far back.
@DirtyBird If you Google it you'll find quite a few of their songs were stolen from other artists. A lot of their big hits. Taken to court over it and everything. As much as I liked Led Zeppelin, I can't excuse that. Ripping off other artists is never okay.
@NankerPhelge Yeah it is true that a composer can accidentally come up with the same series of notes, especially if their knowledge is limited. But to copy an entire song like "A Whole Lotta Love" isn't possible. Also to have so many plagerism cases made against you... Sometimes you just gotta accept they stole
