are the B52's really as bad as they often sound ?

Actually saw these guys years ago when i was at college and thought they were a bit.....alternate (me being polite)
But Rock Lobster was recorded about....'79 (?) and they don't seem to have changed (code for improved) none......Or is it just me ?🐋
