Where I am from (the UK) it wasn't *that* popular to start with (i.e. about 40 years ago). It was influential - a lot of the pop that came after it owed it something. Its main impact was shock value - the Pistols swearing on TV, that sort of thing. But it *did* signal the beginning of a more mature - and more vibrant - era in pop history.
