As one wag put it the Tragically Hip was a bar band that never made it big in the US. I never listened to it and to be honest can not name one of their songs or even recognize the song as being theirs. When they said that Gord Downie had cancer I asked someone who he was. Sad to hear of anyone's passing and I wish him peace in the great hereafter but I still have no idea who he was.

@hippyjoe1955 no, the hip never made it big in the US, but they may be the quintessential Canadian band. There are others, but the Hip sang about Canada...they resonated with us.

@Broadwaygeek67 I am a Canadian. I never listened to TH's music. Not my taste.

@hippyjoe1955 They may an acquired taste I suppose. I like the slower stuff, but I’m not much into hard stuff anymore. More of a BNL fan myself, if I had to choose.

@Broadwaygeek67 I think what bothers me most is when people take their taste in music and project it on to the whole nation. They sang songs and made music. No different than hundreds of other bands or individuals across Canada. Does any one of those bands speak for me or speak for Canada? No. They are simply musicians.
