I think the bass and the piano make this song- along with Van's timeless vocal interpretation That , and how he was able to sell a light jazz inspired song to the folk music crowd of the 1960's. (the US music scene I mean) Not the "beat music scene that was happiness in England at the time of the "ye-ye" music scent of France.

I absolutely agree . There's a exquisite sparseness to that musical arrangement.
@NigelDoes Iloved the 60's. It was such a hotbed of music and musical marriages that could ONLY work IN the 1960's.

Sukiyaki- A Japanese language song hit number on the Billboard charts in the US- that has not happened since. And the world is smaller now than in 1963.
The Girl From Ipanema-a jazz standard hit high on the pop charts and topped the 45 charts.
Ray Charles, a 1950's R&B legend hit number one with a country song-"I Can't Stop loving You"
Even Nat King Cole hit number two with the country themed "Ramblin' Rose" which owed a bit to Ray's song.
Three Dog Night- and a year later, Chicago Transit Authority, came out and mixed, Jazz, Pop, Fusion (or what fusion was at that time) and rock to each create a unique sound.

Those are but a few example-and I am sure you couls cite many more- but it was such a stellar age for music.

Thanks for BA. I appreciate it.
