Amazing pieces of classical music - 18

The so-called "Canzon Primi Toni", or rather the one from many arrangements by Tim Higgens of 16 glorious works composed by Giovanni Gabrieli (from his Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597), including the nine "Canzoni" in the "Sonata Pian ’e Forte" and several transcriptions of more sacred works. Gabrieli's "Sonata pian ’e forte" compositional format is a continuous, composed work, its structure determined by the dialogue between the two instrumental choirs.

The Canzoni (including Gabrieli's Canzon per sonar primi toni à 8, Ch. 170) offer ample opportunities for extroverted brilliance, while the liturgical pieces allow the various players to showcase their beautiful legato and seamless ensemble blend. "O Magnum Mysterium," "Sancta Maria," and "Exaudi me Domine" offer the listener that truly special pleasure, feeling silky-soft yet warm and luxurious at the same time.

The enclosed performance is by The National Brass Ensemble, comprised of the finest brass players from major orchestras in the United States, and reissued in 2015. On Kenneth Clark's soundtrack for his tv-series Civilization (1969) the performance as featured was also such a collaborative effort: The Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, The Cleveland Brass Ensemble, and The Chicago Brass Ensemble
