So let me get this straight. Iran has a blockade on all ships except the ones that pay a toll. The US has a blockade on Iranian ships. The US says

they will stop any ship that pays Iran's toll. The rest of the world wants middle eastern oil, and the other gulf countries want to sell it. So what the US wants to see is a bunch of ships going through the strait, as long they aren't Iranian. And what Iran wants to see is a bunch of ships going through the strait, as long as they pay a toll.

So .... Why doesn't the rest of the world just overpay for their oil, and funnel the excess to Iran through the million ways neighbouring countries can funnel money to each other. Iran opens the strait since they are getting paid. The US declares victory since the strait is open again. The rest of the world gets it's oil and we let a few maritime lawyers and accountants worry about it years later
