Former Shin Bet chief: The war is over, Israel should have held elections 'yesterday'

Former Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman warned Thursday that Israel would have to fight for many years in the Gaza Strip in order to defeat Hamas.

"When we defeat the four [Hamas] battalions in Rafah, this war will not end. In order to defeat Hamas, we will have to operate in the Gaza Strip for many years to come," Argaman said during a television interview with Ilana Dayan. "The war is over; Israel has to go to elections yesterday."

Argaman criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government, saying that their policies adopted led to the events of the October 7.

"At the end of the day, it was this government that caused the October 7, because it was the regime coup that led to our enemies perceiving us as weak. This government is deliberately destroying Israeli society in order to remain in power. In order for us to extricate ourselves from this abyss, this disastrous government must be replaced," he added.
