Have you ever had broken or bruised ribs ???

the exact same thing happened to me 3 years ago. Had x-rays that showed no broken ones, I was in pain for about 3 weeks, then the pain I started getting better.

I still have pain in a place I injured a rib 5 or so years ago.

Couple cracked ones once and bruised another time. Seemed to take longer to heal both times than with other injuries.
