I think I would have preferred work any day to the effects of germs in streams.
A few years ago a friend stayed with me for a weekend. We went swimming in a couple of rivers. She must have swallowed too much of the water, for she had a horrible night and spent much of the next day sleeping it off on the front room floor, with a bucket next to her just in case.
Indeed, with us both worried about Weil's Disease, I took her to our local hospital for tests that luckily proved clear of that potentially-fatal result.
