It doesn’t cost extra to be nice.

Some of us old people are incredibly rude and cranky with the service people at stores.

I have to go to the drugstore quite a bit (long story not for here, not to worry, I’m doing great now) and the Walgreens I use is always crowded with people, old people.

When things are confused, it is almost 100% the customer’s fault. And many of the customers are deaf, speak loud and, well, I live in the land of Dixie.
Those customers lose their shit whenever things go wrong and speak even louder.
“Sir, it looks like your insurance won’t pay for …”
“WHAT? I USE THIS INSURANCE HERE ALL THE TIME!”
“Sir, if you’ll let me finish your insurance requires you to be within two weeks of the expiration of the last fill, you have to pick it up tomorrow.”
“You can’t give it to me today?”
“Sir, if I did I would have to charge you the full amount.”
“How much is that?”
“Four hundred twenty two dollars.”
“WHAT? IT WAS THIRTEEN DOLLARS LAST TIME!!!???!!!”
And it went on for a bit longer.
The guy was frail, but probably younger than me.

Or
“Ma’am, I don’t see a prescription in here. What’s your doctors name?”
“I can’t remember, he’s a brown fella from overseas somewhere. Let me look at my prescription.”
Digs in her purse, looks in another pocket of the purse, pulls out a purse inside of the purse, puts it down on the counter with some other stuff from inside her purse, pats he jacket pockets, pulls out a piece of folded paper and hands it to the tech,
“Oh, I see, they didn’t enter this into the system, we can put it in over at that counter.”
“Why do I have to go over there?”
“This is the counter for prescriptions ready for pickup, the computer is at that counter, this is just a register that you can read data but not input it except the prices.”
“When did they start that?”
“I was here four years ago when they installed it.”
“What’s THAT supposed to mean?”
A kindly old pharmacist appeared from nowhere and called her by name and came from behind the counter, helping her get all her belongings back in her purse. Then spoke to her quietly as he took her a short distance away to talk her back off the ledge.
I was next, I asked the tech, “ Do you have an alert button or something back there?”
She suppressed a laugh, the staff behind the counter stopped and looked up briefly. The people behind me didn’t suppress a laugh.

Every time I go in there I see crazy stuff like that.

My friend said it’s because they’re old and have scary stuff going on. My response was everyone old has scary stuff going on, these rude people were always rude.
