I Think Math Should Grow Up And Solve Its Own Problems

Where'S The Missing Dollar??... I remember my father setting this problem for me years ago, when I was studding hard for my maths qualifications at school.

A party of three people arrive at a hotel, one evening, and enquire at the front desk on the price for a room, with all three of them sharing(!).

The hotel assistant, say it will be $30.

So, each one of the trio, produces a $10 note each, and pays the bill upfront.

The doorman escorts the trio to their room, and they begin to unpack their cases, and get ready for the evening meal.

The doorman returns back downstairs, and is called over, from the front desk, by the hotel assistant, who just booked in the party of three.

The hotel assistant explains to the doorman, that a special promotion is in operation this week, and if three people book in together, they receive a $5 discount.
Having already paid upfront, the hotel assistant gives the doorman $5, and tells him to take it upstairs and refund the customers.

So.... Off goes the doorman, back upstairs, with this $5. And he's wondering, how he can divided It equally.????

What he does is this : he puts $2 in his pocket ( for all his running up and down these damned steps!), and gives each of the trio $1 each.

Now - here's the problem, that my father set. : the trio have now paid $9 each (it was $10, but they all got $1 back)
3 times 9 = 27
add the 2 in the doorman's pocket
=29 !!!

Where's that missing dollar gone???????!!??!?????????????????????????!!

Answers below please !!!!!

Yours confused
