I don't understand. 1+0 = 1 therefore I calculated the real number "1".
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 Yes but there are infinitely many numbers you can't calculate. You can only calculate a countable amount of numbers.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Luke73 You mean like sqrt(2)?
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 That's a calculateable number, there exists an algorithm that produces that outcome. For a number to be not calculateable it means that there doesn't exist a (finite) algorithm that gives you the number to an arbitrary precision.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Luke73 So then what is sqrt(2) to complete decimal precision?
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 You can use for example Newton's method to calculate as many decimals as you want, so you can calculate it to an arbitrary precision. If it's not precise enough, you can just keep calculating until you achieved your wanted precision.

@Luke73 Thank you. Does that mean it's measurable?
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 What do you mean with measurable exactly? What definition?
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Luke73 Does it have a sigma-algebra?
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 I don't really know much about measure-theory and such, so I can't answer that.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Luke73 No problem. As you can see, I'm just learning myself.
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 That's all that this was ever about.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Luke73 There is no such thing as an uninteresting number because if you take the set of all uninteresting numbers and sort it from lowest to highest then the lowest number is interesting because it's lowest. And you can keep doing that forever until there are no more numbers in the set.
Luke73 · 26-30, M
@irishmolly72 That's true! I've actually heard that before, which makes it more interesting. Now that I think of it, it doesn't have to be a set which you can order, because of the axiom of choice, you can take any set and assume you can take out any object and declare that as interesting.
@irishmolly72 Once again, an interesting point.
Note I did send you a post a while back, but no response. You have interesting posts.

@Djc59 Sorry hun. The guys way outnumber the women on here. I must have missed it.
@irishmolly72 NP... this is only where I could tell you. Doesn't matter - you have a real life.
@irishmolly72 Did I miss your profession - in the mathematical sciences?
