I bet you can't prove that you can just chose an element from any set.

Even with simple sets such as a subset from the real numbers.
probably not....but i bet almost all kids in your age group who works in retail can't count change back without a register or calculator
@beermeplease So very true, as a former food service and retail manager, I saw the degradation of this first hand as time went by. I always made sure my employees at least knew basic retail and food service math and could properly count change back, not just dump it in their hands.

@beermeplease Besides that though, what's your point?
@Luke73 exactly
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Why are you thinking about that haha? It's like formally proving there is a good person in every single group of people out there, and mind you, this is more specific.

Every sample group is different. But choosing an element would require a criteria list.
Luke73 · 22-25, M
@Casheyane Oh, I didn't come up with that on my own haha. It's called the axiom of choice.
PalteseMalconFunch · 36-40, T
What do you mean?
Luke73 · 22-25, M
@PalteseMalconFunch With countable numbers it's quite intuitive, like the Natural numbers. You choose the smallest number and then with the new set, you can choose the smallest again and through this process you're able to "extract" every number.

@Luke73 That’s what I’m asking. How do you even choose undefinable elements?

Or I guess it is definable? I dunno we’re way out of what I’m familiar with
Luke73 · 22-25, M
@PalteseMalconFunch What do you mean with definable?
Louis54 · 70-79, M
I'm in ZFC and pick elements with ease and grace.
Luke73 · 22-25, M
@Louis54 Because you have the axiom of choice

@jshm2 Yes exactly. And because it’s an axiom, you can’t prove it
Most of us have been out of school for decades, we do not care.

@NativePortlander1970 Why do you say that? I was trying to have a civil discussion but you always bring it down to a personal level.
@Luke73 Don't wait until it's too late, I used to be like you, hyper focused on the small shit, working my ass off to support others I should not have, not able to enjoy life, and then I got super sick and no longer able to do the things I could have done when I was able to, feeling deep regrets.
Luke73 · 22-25, M
@NativePortlander1970 Again, why do you say that? I'm sorry you got sick but you don't know anything about me. Why do you say that I'm like you? We don't know each other in the slightest.
