Add a +, or ÷, or ×, to each space to make the equation work... proceeding from left to right.
4 _ 6 _ 2 _ 8 = 40

4+6 divided by 2x8 =40. (I couldn't find the divide sign on my keyboard.) never mind, I forgot order of operations.
