Enable the Input icon in your menu bar on your Mac.
1) Open System Preferences and select Keyboard.
2) Click the Input Sources tab at the top.
3) Check the box for Show Input menu in menu bar.
Now that you have the Input icon right in your menu bar, simply click it. Select Show Emojis & Symbols and the Character Viewer will open right up.
The other option you have with the Input icon menu is to open the Keyboard Viewer. This opens a convenient an on-screen keyboard. So if you’re interested in using that too, you now have an easy way to open it.

@MightyLion You need to use subscript and superscript.
I am using Microsoft Word and the font formatter is part of the Home menu.

I'm not sure how I would get subscript or superscript on my mac but do you know how I would type that little o between f and g? @Northwest

This is not a Mac thing. This is Microsoft word. Do you the X2 and X2 under the font name, font size? The first one is subscript which puts the character at the bottom next to the previous character, and the second one is superscript which puts the character at the top next to the previous character.
For the f of g of x notation, I suggest you type an o and then make it subscript, like I did in the picture.
If you still don't understand what subscript and superscript is, google instructions for Microsoft word.
