Horses ๐ in Winter
Horses generally prefer living out in pastures rather than being confined to indoor stalls during the winter, provided they have access to dry shelter and adequate forage.
Housing and Shelter Options
โข Pasture with Natural or Built Shelter:
Most horses do fine outside with a run-in shed, a barn, or a dense stand of trees to block wind, rain, and sleet.
โข All-Weather Turnout:
Areas surfaced with woodchips, shredded rubber, or concrete (bedded down with straw or shavings) help prevent deep mud and protect against conditions like mud fever.
โข Winter Stabling:
If a horse must be stabled (due to clipping, age, illness, or severe weather), the stall must offer good ventilation, clean bedding, and at least four hours daily outside for movement and social interaction.
Key Winter Management Needs
โข Forage for Heat:
Fibre digestion generates internal body heat. Provide extra hay or forage, ensuring horses never fast for more than 4 hours.
โข Water Access:
Check water buckets or troughs multiple times daily to prevent freezing; warm or unfrozen water (20โ70L daily) helps avoid impaction colic.
โข Rugging / Blanketing:
Un-clipped horses with thick natural coats often do not need a rug. Reserve rugs for clipped, old, thin, or poorly horses, or use a rain sheet in wet weather. Remove and adjust rugs daily.
โข Health Checks:
Monitor daily for mud fever (cracked skin/scabs), rain scald, and snow balling up in hooves.
