@mysteryespresso you spend time on the ground with it. Teach it you are safe put the horse in the round pen and get it to move it's feet when you ask. Then stop and turn around and they should approach you to show they trust. Once you complete this you go to teaching that a saddle is safe, and use a feed bag to add weight.... Then you stand in one stirrup and see how they react.... Once they except that you are usually good to get on and ask them forward if they regress you start back at Step one till they are broke to ride.

@mysteryespresso breaking a horse isn't about breaking their spirit or their heart. It's about breaking the walls that seperate the human and the horse from working as a single unit. Once those walls are gone you can accomplish anything as a rider. Cowboy breaking (aka breaking spirit) does nothing but put you in a place where the horse will not care if you get injured. If you break properly the horse will go get help.... Big difference
